French painter and drawer born at Le Havre in 1901. He devotes his efforts exclusively to his art beginning with 1942.
Considered as one of the founders of ?L?ART BRUT?, he often used automatic processes (?Empreintes?) in his plastic art works.
He attempted to be an explorer of the physical world using the mixing of materials, scratching, incising, graffiti or rubbing. In his credo, the various elements, substances and materials recall the corresponding levels of geography, geology, descriptive physics or biochemistry.
Nowadays, one can notice a certain continuity of his work in the work of the New York-based painter Jean Michel BASQUIAT
