William Cavendish, Earl, Marquess, then Duke of Newcastle, he was a cavalier in the true sense as well as in the political sense, leading the Cavalier Party of KING CHARLES I against CROMWELL?s Rounded Heads. He belonged to one of the oldest English families since the time of the TUDORS. He was in favor with the STUARTS, James I, and particularly with the Prince of Wales, the future Charles II. After years of civil wars, he settled in Antwerp and built a horse-riding school that soon became famous. In Antwerp he wrote his magnificent treaty, with marvelous and imaginative illustrations. In 1665, he is appointed Duke and Peer by Charles II, Knight of the Order of the Garter, Governor of Newcastle, and Chief Justice of the counties north of Trent.
