One of the greatest geniuses of France. He was admitted at the Academy of Sciences in 1773 at the age of 26. He was appointed intendant (keeper) of the Jardins du Roi (King's Gardens) in 1739. The publication of his major work, "Histoire Naturelle", known worldwide, started in 1749 and continued until his death. Art lovers search for this first edition because of the beauty of its prints (Brunet I, 1375).
